We provide independent living for people over 60

How the Charity Began

Alice Coralie Glyn was always a champion for women in need.

She originally provided support for women who needed a regular place to stay, be with people, and get a hot meal.

In her will, she left a small legacy that was used to build 14 small bungalows in Welwyn Garden City.

The houses were built in Turmore Dale and Hyde Valley

Who are the houses for?

The houses are administered by the charity which is run by volutary trustees who continue to run a scheme to provide assistance to people who fit the following criteria:
Over 60

Women or men over the age of 60

As the properties are not warden controlled or managed, our residents live independently

In need or distress

Certain criteria will apply

Local to WGC

Alice stipulated that residents should come from the Welwyn Hatfield area or Tunbridge Wells

We are currently looking for a new Trustee. Can you help?

ALICE CORALIE GLYN wrote three novels and was an early advocate of women’s rights a decade before the Pankhurst sisters were active, and even started a London club for women. After her death, the Illustrated London News described her as “a woman of word and deed” and that is a fitting epitaph for a woman who not only spoke up for other women less fortunate than herself, but also gave practical help to them which continues to this day.

Alice Coralie Glyn Homes is now a registered charity which provides affordable housing in Welwyn Garden City for people over the age of 60 and is a member of the Almshouse Association. The charity is run by a small group of voluntary trustees and our properties are managed by First Garden City Homes.

  • Would you like to continue Alice’s work?
  • Can you help us provide strategic stewardship of our 14 bungalows?
  • Do you already have, or would you like to develop, suitable personal and professional skills?
  • Are you able to give a little something back to your local community?

If the answer to the above questions is yes, we currently have a vacancy for a new Trustee. If you are interested in joining us, please email our Chair of Trustees – geoff.stilwell59@gmail – for more information and a Trustee application pack

We look forward to hearing from you!
